Synopsis
Early Railways of Dalkeith by Brian Scott. This book provides a guide to the routes of the railways that existed in the Dalkeith area, primarily the Duke of Buccleuch’s colliery railway and the NBR Monktonhall, Smeaton and Hardengreen branch.
Dalkeith’s first station opened in 1838 and was financed by the Duke of Buccleuch, not only the terminus for the Edinburgh and Dalkeith railway, but became the starting point for the Duke’s local collieries.
In 1862 the North British Railway company obtained permission to construct a line between Monktonhall to Hardengreen on the Edinburgh to Hawick line. This became known as the Monktonhall, Smeaton to Hardengreen branch.
