Synopsis

The Dyke Branch line was opened in 1887 but eventually closed in 1938 owing to a fall in passenger numbers. This steep line was primarily constructed to take daytrippiers to view the natural feature known as The Devil’s Dyke in the South Downs.

Peter Harding provides a fascinating history of this line.
