Less widely known is the fact that in two instances in London, the railways played a part in the Victorian way of death. It was railways that provided a link between the capital and cemeteries in the countryside. Brookwood was the first of these schemes, but less well known is the Great Northern London Cemetery at Colney Hatch, now known as the New Southgate Cemetery. This cemetery was connected to the capital by the railway and had its own funeral station at Kings Cross and a short branch leading from the Great Northern Railway’s main line.
