Synopsis
The Railway Buildings of Joseph Bull & Sons: Builders of Southampton by Stephen Old. During the Victorian period, many businesses grew which helped shaped Britain. Joseph Bull and Sons was one such company. Started by Joseph Bull as a building and carpentry business in Southampton, it grew in importance and took on, and completed many locally, nationally and internationally significant building projects.
In the 1870s to 1890s they had several contracts with the London and South Western Railway Company to maintain and expand the railway network in Hampshire. They also won the contract to build the stations on the North Cornwall Line.
Over the years many railway buildings were constructed, from various stations in the Southampton area to Corfe Castle and Swanage stations in Dorset.
