Synopsis

The Railway Through the Strettons: The First 150 Years by Derek Askew. This book was published in 2002 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first public passenger train services in the town of Church Stretton, including All Stretton, Little Stretton and Marshbrook.

Passenger services on the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway began on 21st April 1852. Initially they ran only between Shrewsbury and Ludlow and the line was single track except in stations. The route was opened fully to Hereford late in 1853 and was doubled throughout. It quickly became established as an important link between South Wales and the north west of England.

In 1860 the Great Western Railway amalgamated with the West Midland Railway, a move which the directors of the Shrewsbury and Hereford saw as a threat to their line. They therefore approached the LNWR to lease the line which they accepted. However in 1862 the line became a joint operation between the LNWR and GWR.

Chapters include a brief history of the Shrewsbury and Hereford Railway, the railway in the Strettons, personal reminiscences and bringing the story to the present. Includes more than 40 images.
