Synopsis
The Ramsgate Tunnels: Main Line, Air Raid Shelter and Railway by Nick Catford. The London Chatham and Dover Railway Company opened their extension from Margate to Ramsgate harbour in 1863. The last section of the line ran in a 1124 yard tunnel from Dumpton Park to the terminus on the seafront.
The harbour station and tunnel were closed in 1926 and was purchased and leased to an amusements company. The former railway tunnel was turned into a narrow gauge railway. It was opened iin 1936. In 1939 the railway ceased operations and the tunnel became an air raid shelter. After the war the railway resumed but eventually closed in 1965.
This book provides the full history of the tunnels and is illustrated with many images.
