The Standedge Tunnels by Trevor Ellis. The Standedge Tunnels are four parallel tunnels through the Pennines, just over three miles in length. Three are railway, once operated by the LNWR, and one canal.

Construction of the canal started in the 1790s and opened in 1811. The three railway tunnels were opened in 1848, 1871 and 1894 respectively. Only the canal and the third railway tunnel are operational today.

Trevor Ellis provides a fascinating history of these tunnels.
