The Wellington, Much Wenlock and Craven Arms Railway by Adrian Knowles. A new illustrated history of this charismatic GWR cross-country branch line that served the ironmasters of Coalbrookdale and the quarries and farmlands of Wenlock Edge.
The result of 40 years research and compilation, this book features many highly detailed architectural drawings and is produced in a stunning large format, setting new standards in design and reproduction.
Unlike most branch lines, the Much Wenlock route was not conceived with a single prime objective, such as linking two towns, but instead it evolved in a piecemeal fashion from the schemes of several local railway companies. As the network developed, the construction was painfully slow, hampered by difficult engineering work and constant lack of funds. Had it not been for considerable cash investments by the Great Western Railway and Thomas Brassey (contractor), the branch would probably never have been finished. Includes 300 illustrations.
