Synopsis

Aberystwyth to Carmarthen including the Newcastle Emlyn and Aberayron Branches by Geraint Roberts.

Printed on gloss art paper with colour images throughout, this book by Geraint Roberts provides the definitive history of the line. Operated by the GWR, the line opened in the 1860s and became popular with farmers with the transport of livestock, milk and cheese. The closure of the line happened in stages with the final section being abandoned in 1973.

In terms of railway use, a journey from Aberystwyth south involves a lengthy detour via Shrewsbury. Once there was a more direct route. What for most of the twentieth century was referred to as the Aberystwyth to Carmarthen railway, was created by the endeavour of three companies that culminated in a network consisting of one line between the two towns, and two quiet branches to Newcastle Emlyn and Aberayron (Aberaeron).

Even under the dreaded Beeching axe, the line did not go quietly, and part of it was used for dairy and other goods traffic until 1973. Includes more than 400 images.
