Synopsis
J15s Remembered by R. Hardy, Lyn Brooks and John Watling. This book celebrates their eighty years of service with a comprehensive history of the class and with 78 photographs, some in colour, shows the J15s at work. A section is also included about the 43 that went to France in the First World War. The book also contains R H N Hardy’s memories of the J15s in BR days, a colour album covering their latter years of service and informative captions for each photo.
The Great Eastern Railway’s Y14 class of locomotives was designed to be its standard goods tender engine. The design fulfilled this function admirably for the GER, the LNER, when the class was redesignated J15, and onto the BR era.
The engines were also put to good use on branch line passenger trains and some secondary main line services, and they outlived the class that was supposed to replace them.
