Synopsis

Manchester to Crewe Part 3: Stockport & Wilmslow to Crewe by E.M. Johnson. Includes Alderley Edge, Chelford, Goostrey, Holmes Chapel and Sandbach.

A detailed survey of the lines from Stockport & Wilmslow to Crewe using mainly high quality archive black & white photographs, interspersed with some more recent colour images.

All of the images are accompanied by detailed extended captions containing historical information about the location, which builds to create a detailed historical review of the line. Additional text provides further historical information about many of locations and the development of railways in the area.

Traction and rolling stock is featured from the late 19th century, through to the heyday of steam in the 1950s and on to the diesel and electric era. Railway infrastructure is also prominent, not least the transition from steam operation to modern electrification in the 1960s. Special coverage is given to Crewe in the watershed years of the early 20th century, when the reign of the legendary F.W. Webb was giving way to the eras of Whale and Bowen-Cooke.
