Synopsis

Railways of Buchan by Keith Fenwick and Douglas Flett. The Buchan Lines ran north from the GNSR main line at Dyce to serve Peterhead and Fraserburgh. Later branches served Cruden Bay and St. Combs. They served a rich farming area as well as the two important fishing ports. Freight and passenger services prospered until road competition took its toll.

The Cruden line, never a success, closed first. Passenger services ceased on the rest of the system in 1965 and the last freight service was withdrawn as late as 1979.

Today, much of the trackbed is the very popular Formartine & Buchan Way. Maud station is the site of an enterprising small railway museum.

Includes 120 images.
