Synopsis
The Man in the Van by Irving Silverwood and Brian Watson.
Irving Silverwood was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1944 and through conversations with Brian Watson, he recounts memories of the railway in Woodbridge from childhood and many tales from his fifty years working on the railways in Suffolk.
He was witness to the steam age, the introduction of diesels such as Class 31 and Class 22 ‘Baby Warships’, and the huge transitions up to recent times. His wide-ranging roles have included Assistant Crossing Keeper, Station Master (Ipswich) and Guarding duties on freight and passenger trains. Irving was also a friend of Ian Allen, the well known railway writer and photographer.
Always engaging and informative, this is a book for anyone who enjoys railways and related memoirs.
