Synopsis

The Mines of the Shrewsbury Coalfields: Hanwood, Leebotwood, Dryton and Trials in North East Shropshire by Michael Shaw.

This book is a history of the three small coalfields running from just east of Shrewsbury west into Powys and south almost to Church Stretton and unsuccessful trials from the north east of these up to the Cheshire and Staffordshire borders.

It is the history of three coalfields of no more than local importance at their best. The coal was thin, faulted and often low grade but better than anything else affordable. Most of the mines did not survive the coming of the railways in the mid-nineteenth century though Hanwood survived until 1940.

With more than one hundred photographs and maps, including some depicting railway coal wagons of Hanwood and Arscott colliery, this publication by Michael Shaw is highly recommended.
