Synopsis
The Moray Firth Coast Line by David Fasken and Graham Maxtone. The GNSR had two routes from Aberdeen to Elgin. The Coast Line ran to Portsoy and then along the Moray Firth Coast to Elgin, serving also a succession of fishing villages.
This book relates the building of the line as the local fishing industry developed and how it evolved under various railway companies and during periods of significant financial pressure. Both the line and its branch to Banff are described. The line prospered in its first 40 years from fish, whisky, agricultural and general freight, as well as passengers and tourism, it steadily declined because of road competition through LNER and BR days.
It was closed under the Beeching Plan in May 1968.
