Although the small picturesque town of Westerham in Kent is approximately only 22 miles south of London, the former local railway always had the charm of a delightful country branch line situated in the Vale of Holmesdale, just south of the Pilgrims Way, and just above the River Darent.
The single track line was opened in 1881 and ran from Dunton Green on the main line to the terminus at Westerham until it closed in 1961. The branch train in later years is best remembered by its nickname ‘The Flyer’ and was normally worked by a tank engine and a pull-and-push set of two carriages.
The Westerham line ran only a short distance, connecting Westerham, Brasted and Chevening with the village of Dunton Green and the South Eastern Main Line. A distance of just over four miles.
