Valleys Pacer Farewell by Jeremy Segrott. Introduced as a low cost stop gap in the late 1980s, the Pacer has played an important role across the UK. With the trains’ bodies derived from the Leyland bus they had a utilitarian quality.

South Wales has had a long association with the Pacer, the class 143s migrating south to Cardiff in 1991. These were later joined by Class 142 units from the north of England. In late 2020 class 142s were progressively withdrawn from service. In 2021 Transport for Wales was the only operating company still using Pacers. So when the final class 143 took place on 29th May 2021, it brought to an end both their long association with south Wales, and Pacer operation in the UK.

This book covers the latter years of Pacer operations in south Wales.
